Perhaps you’re new to screen printing, or want to try something that’s different to your usual textile printing. Either way, you’re doing your research to find the best ink for screen printing on paper. While there’s a world of screen print ink options out there, making a few careful choices will help ensure a crisp, safe and vivid result.

Key considerations when choosing screen printing ink for paper

Screen printing on paper uses the same process as screen printing on textiles or clothing; however, it’s worth choosing the right inks and equipment for the best possible result. Here are some key factors to consider.

Water based vs plastisol composition

Plastisol inks consist of PVC particles suspended in a liquid plasticiser, while water-based inks consist of pigment suspended in a water base. When screen printing on paper, water-based inks are the obvious choice as they produce a strong print without the need for curing – you can simply air dry your paper prints. You can also use water to rinse screens and equipment, unlike plastisol inks that require the use of solvents.

Tip: Water-based inks can be thinner than plastisol inks, so if you’re used to printing with plastisol inks it’s a good idea to use a finer mesh to ensure a crisp result. See our PERMAPRINT PREMIUM® specifications for mesh recommendations with this range.

Environmental and safety considerations

If you’ve worked with screen printing inks before, you’ll know that some products can contain harmful phthalates and even produce noxious fumes while printing. These can be harmful both to people and the natural environment, so it’s worth looking for a safer option. The PERMAPRINT Premium® range is formulated free of aromatic hydrocarbons, volatile solvent, PVC resin or Phthalates Plasticiser. This non toxic screen printing ink is safe to work with and is ideal for printing wallpaper, wrapping paper, posters, shop displays, stickers, packaging – and more.

Tip: Customers love to hear that a screen print is made with non-toxic and sustainable materials, so be sure to share this information if you’re selling your screen printed products.

Your paper or card stock of choice

Of course, your choice of screen printing inks may also depend on the paper stock you’re printing onto. If you’re printing onto dark coloured stock such as navy blue or black, be sure to choose a professional quality ink that will produce an intense, opaque result. You might also want to incorporate a metallic, glow or gloss varnish finish to your paper prints – all achievable with the PERMAPRINT Premium ® range.
